You can choose to disable Windows 10 updates using two different methods. Microsoft allows users to use Registry file and Group Policy Editor to make changes in the functioning of their Windows operating system. See the steps below to stop automatic updates in Windows 10 using two different approaches.

1 – Disable Updates in Windows 10 using System Registry File

In this method, you need to download ‘Notify before download and install’ or ‘Never check for updates’ REG files and execute it on PC Windows 10.

After downloading the REG file on your PC, run it, and follow on-screens setup instructions as prompted. Once installed, restart PC and finalize new changes.

2 – Disable Updates in Windows 10 using Local Group Policy Editor

There is another method that you can use to disable automatic Windows 10 updates, which involves Local Group Policy Editor.

Note: Before starting, make sure you are logged in to Windows 10 as an administrator.

Start off by pressing the Windows + R keys to open Run dialogue box. Type gpedit.msc in the field and hit enter.

You should now see a Local Group Policy Editor window on the screen. You can also open Group Policy Editor from Control Panel as well. To do so, Open Control Panel, under Administrator tools, search group policy editor and click on it.

In the Local Group Policy Editor window, head to computer configuration / administrative > templates / windows > components / windows update.

On the right window pane, under Settings, select Configure Automatic Updates option from the list.

A new window will open, here you can select Windows update as notify before downloading or installing any update or complete disable updates by choosing the Never Notify or check for update option.

  • To set Windows updates to notify before downloading, in the Conifigure automatic updates window, select Enabled option. Now, under the Options box, select Notify for download and notify for install, click Apply and then OK.
  • To set Windows updates to never notify or disable, select Disabled option and hit Apply and OK.
  • Next, close the Group Policy Editor window.
  • Now go to Settings > Advanced Options > Check for updates, here you will see ‘Never check for updates’ or ‘Notify to download’ set as default.
